To get more Google reviews, ask every customer on the same day, with a direct link or QR code to your profile and a short, personal message. Google allows asking, but prohibits offering anything in return (discounts, gifts, prize draws) and asking only happy customers. Here is the full method, ready-to-use messages and the mistakes that cost reviews, or even the profile.
Why Google reviews matter so much
Reviews play two roles. For Google, count, rating and recency are part of prominence, one of the three local ranking factors. For customers, they are the first numbers compared between two profiles: 4.8 with 120 reviews against 4.3 with 9, the choice is quick.
- The count: proof that many customers have used you.
- The average rating: perceived quality.
- Recency: a latest review six months old suggests an inactive business.
- The content: customers’ words (“fast call-out”, “boiler”) also help explain what you do.
- Your replies: they show a business that listens.
Step 1: get your review link
- Open your profile (signed in to the managing account).
- Look for “Ask for reviews” or “Get more reviews”.
- Copy the short link Google provides.
- Test it on your phone: it should open the review window directly.
Step 2: make a QR code
Turn the link into a QR code (plenty of free generators exist) and place it where customers are happy: counter, till, vehicle, invoice, business card, delivery note. Add a simple line: “Your review helps us. Scan it, it takes 30 seconds.”
Step 3: ask at the right moment
The best moment is the same day, right after the service, when the customer has just thanked you. A request a week later gets far fewer responses.
Text or WhatsApp message
“Hello Ms Weber, thanks again for trusting us today. If you’re happy with the work, a Google review would really help us: [link]. Have a good day, Marco – Meier Plumbing”
“Hello, thank you for choosing us for your bathroom renovation. Your review helps other customers in the area find us. One click is all it takes: [link]. Many thanks, the Meier team”
In person
“If you’re happy, a review on Google would really help us. Shall I text you the link?” Asking for agreement before sending noticeably increases the response rate.
Step 4: follow up once, no more
One short, polite reminder three to five days later is enough. Beyond that you irritate the customer and risk a negative review.
What Google prohibits
- Offering a discount, gift, prize draw or any incentive in exchange for a review.
- Asking only happy customers for reviews, or discouraging negative ones.
- Writing reviews yourself, or having friends, family or staff write them.
- Buying reviews from a service or “agency”.
- Offering something in return for changing or removing a negative review.
Google can remove the reviews concerned and, in case of abuse, restrict or suspend the profile. These rules are in its prohibited content policy (sources at the end of the article).
Make asking automatic
| Business | When to ask | How |
|---|---|---|
| Trades (plumber, electrician) | At the end of the job | Text with link from the business phone |
| Garage | When handing back the car | QR code on the invoice + text in the evening |
| Hair or beauty salon | At payment | QR code at the till |
| Restaurant | With the bill | QR code on the bill folder |
| Practice, accountant | After a completed file | Email with link |
A steady flow beats a spike: 4 reviews a month for a year weigh more, and look more credible, than 40 reviews in one week.
What about negative reviews?
Every business gets them. A calm reply with a solution often reassures more than a profile with no criticism at all. Templates are in how to respond to Google reviews. If a review breaks the rules (fake customer, abuse), it can be reported: see how to remove a Google review.
Track your progress
Note your review count and rating every week and compare them with the three businesses shown before you for your trade and town. The gap is what counts, not the absolute number. The free check gives you that comparison in one minute.
Train the team: the line to say
Reviews rarely come from a sign alone; they come from a person asking. Give everyone on the team the same line, at the same moment of service.
- At the counter: “Thanks! If you have a minute, a Google review really helps us. The QR code is right here.”
- On a job: “I’ll send you a quick text with the review link, if you’re happy with the work.”
- On the phone after a call-out: “I’ll text you the link, it takes 30 seconds.”
A realistic target
Start from your number of customers a month and the gap with the third competitor. If you serve 60 customers a month and one in six leaves a review, that’s about 10 reviews a month: a gap of 100 reviews closes in around ten months. This calculation, specific to your business, is worth more than any average figure.
Reviews in several languages
Let customers write in their own language. Reviews in English and German show you serve both clienteles; reply in the language of each review.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy Google reviews?
No. Google treats them as fake content: it can remove them and restrict or suspend the profile.
Should I ask unhappy customers too?
Ask all customers the same way. Google prohibits asking only happy customers or discouraging negative reviews.
Can I offer a coffee or a discount for a review?
No. Any incentive is prohibited, however small, including a prize draw among customers who leave a review.
Can my employees leave a review?
No, Google sees that as a conflict of interest. Reviews must come from real customers.
How many reviews do I need to rank well?
There’s no magic number: what counts is the gap with the competitors ahead of you on your search and the regularity of new reviews.
Can a customer leave a review without a Google account?
No, a Google account is required. That’s why a direct link that opens the review window reduces drop-offs.
Can I show my Google reviews on my website?
Yes, many tools let you embed them. Quote them accurately, without editing the text.
Do reviews on local.ch count for Google?
Reviews on other platforms contribute to your online reputation, but Google reviews are the ones shown on your profile and compared in the local pack.
